As someone who was born in Europe before WWII, and who has vivid memories of the Depression, I greatly appreciate your world view and its implications for preserving the assets accumulated as result of lifelong thrift and frugality. Indeed, we hold gold bullion at a level of about 40% of total assets, about to go higher. I have been trying to influence our highly educated American friends to consider the meaning of current events and to act accordingly - an impossible task; they simply can't believe that "it can happen here" ; but it is happening, and it will.

Lifelong NYC residents are not rubes, for sure. RA

I once had a few relatives who were lifelong residents of The Big Apple, and while they were not, to the best of my knowledge, rubes, I do wonder how many lifelong NYC residents were invested in the following as they went poof, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and Bernie "It's all gone, all fifty billion of it" Madoff.

I believe the single most important part of Chuck's outline is --IV. Brace for the Worst--. Many folks who understand the ramifications of what's going on fiscally are still trying to play both ends against the middle and time the reallocation of a majority of their investable assets. I thought long and hard about that and decided to put everything in place now that I could and just step back. If we haven't learned that black swan events aren't as rare as we believed by now, we'll never learn.
 Forgot to add great post! Looking forward to seeing your next post!

slightly confused. does the fact that chuck has been a life long resident of NYC have any bearing on his financial abilities?
it sounds as though his residency is a pre-requisite for being able to understand the markets.
if that is the case then the vast, vast majority of us are doomed.

&&&&&

I'm confused. What, in my 24-word intro concerning Chuck, has caused you to infer that I believe NYC residency is a "requisite" for being able to understand the markets? Lifelong NYC residents are not rubes, for sure, and they survive by their wits. RA
