I find it rather funny when I hear people saying stuff like ,”it’s Feb. and it’s really cold out so that proves global warming is a fraud, or I went out on Valentine’s day and had to wait in line at a Rest. means the economic collapse is somehow false. These are the musings of people who either don’t read or don’t know how to use Google,r or are so self centered that they can’t get past their own biases to look at the larger picture. It’s always about I I I with these types. I own Oil stock so global warming is nonsense. Oh, now I own windmill stock so now it isn’t nonsense. Etc etc.

Discovering who will be survivors among the store chains should promise good returns eventually. A friend of mine who works as a fund manager suggested Best Buy could be such a name. But he also added it could be too early to venture in, because the going out of business-sale of the bankrupt Circuit City has to get out of the way first. All sectors should have such plays, but picking out eventual winners with more market share will not be easy. This said, research analysts are already on the look-out for such eventual survivors.

“inexplicable”, that Friday was Valentine eve. It may be a last fling, but it is explainable why restaurants were busy that day.

WFMI point and figure suggests a double, but we think she may go down along with most retailers over the next four years, albeit the occasional tradeable hiccup.
Barter may be big.
Regarding free markets, our Constitution says government cannot repudiate contracts, but that is exactly what Obama’s and Jamie Dimon’s mortgage renegotiation proposals are doing, with consequences destroying the mortgage markets. Who will want to borrow or lend, knowing terms can change?
Interesting times indeed.
In response to the long waiting lines at restaurants comment by Rick: My wife and I were told that it would be an hour and a half wait to get a table at the Olive Garden in Whitehall. So we went shopping thinking that after 8:00 pm the crowds would have been finished with dinner. We sure were wrong as we went back after 8 and were told that the wait was 1 hour and 20 minutes!!. We waited. The reason we went out was because we knew how horrible the economy was we thought we wouldn’t have to wait to get seated instead it seems as if nobody cares.
confused.

I think most of us, as is a typical modus operandi, are in denial. Those that aren’t recommend gold and guns. I recommend goodwill, and plenty of it.

Rick,
According to the latest bulletin from Laboratoire-Europeen-d-Anticipation-Politique (LEAP-2020) you are not nearly as pessimistic as you need to be.
Quoting: “Practically speaking, the April 2009 G20 Summit is probably the last chance to put on the right tracks the forces at play, i.e. before the sequence of UK and then US defaults begin (2). Failing which, they will lose their capacity to control events (3), including those in their own countries for many of them; and the world will enter this phase of geopolitical dislocation like a “drunken boat”. At the end of this phase of geopolitical dislocation, the world will look more like Europe in 1913 rather than our world in 2007. ”
As always, your observations are spot on. I chuckled to myself upon reading your closing refrain: “Are those of us who are still employed having a final fling? ”
Indeed, tomorrow I am off to Brazil for two weeks of frivolity, fresh off of losing my 150K consulting gig & a month or two from losing my house, having already given up on trying to replace my former income with the bit gigs offered me at half my old salary. At least I’ll enjoy my last 4 grand before I have to move back in with the parents & start picking up pennies.

Tonight Cramer recommends buying gold !!! perhaps it would be wise to sell in the AM and look to re-enter after a correction. Its looking a tad parabolic on its own but with his added touch it seems a good move.

Good comment Will. Read Mark Mitchell’s piece “The Story of Deep Capture,” and you will find out more of what Cramer has been up to over the years:
