You are absolutely correct. I should have said “trading target.”

Hi TKO,
The largest trading partner of the US is actually (surprise!) Canada and by a fairly significant margin too. Seems that China gets more attention on this subject though because it has such a huge trade imbalance, shipping far more than it imports.

Geopolitical Update. Retrenchment On the Eastern Front. That wily Putin outbid the US for basing rights in Kyrgyzstan, a secondary supply route supporting Afghan operations. The primary route through Pakistan is no longer reliable, leaving the military presence in Afghanistan severely constrained. The missile shield for Eastern Europe has been scrapped. The US presence in Iraq will be reduced. Longterm allies are being ignored while the likes of Iran and Syria are being encouraged. To top it off, analysis reveals that the Russians destroyed a US satellite employing one of their own killer satellites (KSAT), supposedly after some provocation. The debris field created by the explosion may have a half-life of 5,000 years, although heavier pieces such as the KSAT’s nuclear powerplant might fall to earth sooner. Hopefully, any nuclear material will land in an uninhabited area, perhaps the Siberian forest, and score a direct hit on Putin while he is out hunting. This “Scorched Space” antic reminds us of similar outrages during the Cold War, and is typical of the mindset and imbecilic mentality inherent in that class of humanity: Genus: General. Species: Russian. Other “Soviet” initiatives in South America and elsewhere clearly indicate that are prepared to fill any vacuum (including the high ground of space) and are not terribly impressed with the “We are the World” hymns emanating from the White House.
Meanwhile in the Formosa Straits, the Chinese spent 5 days harassing a US spyship. Having been deluged by large volumes of water from the US vessel, the waterlogged Chicom crew momentarily retreated. Shortly thereafter, and now stripped to their skivvies, the persistent Chinese resumed their provocations, undoubtedly evoking a couple of laughs from the stalwart sailors and merchant mariners manning the hoses. Here, however, the US has an edge. The Chinese have belatedly realized that once a borrowers balance reaches a certain level, he often has more say in running the bank than the shareholders. Moreover, it seems the Chinese would prefer to remain our “#1” trading partner.Recently, Ms Clinton showered the political cadres in China with voluminous tears concerning human rights, Tibetan repression, global warming, and carbon footprints. We assume, that these loyal apparatchiks will employ the same tactic as their comrades in the trawlers. Not too much support for the one world approach here, either. However, it would be foolish to underestimate the ability of Madame Hilary to lose this US advantage and snatch defeat from victory. Whether the retrenchment in the East turns into global rout remains to be seen. Nevertheless, the administrations indecision, together with the specter of inflation, and whiffs of protectionism will provide nice support for gold as it resumes its trip up the ladder.
