A while back, we featured the story of New Hampshire farmer Hank Letarte, whose White Gates Farm operates like a perfect economy in miniature. (Click here for the original article and pictures.) Hank and his wife, Heather, have recently embarked on a new project at White Gates – the expansion of an Edible Education program that he describes thus:
“Sixty years ago, communities depended on the local butcher and the local farmer to supply their food. Today, we have come so far from that model that most people truly have no concept of where their food comes from, or what kind of nutrition it provides. It is important to us to define and underline the word ‘sustainability’. It has been our goal to creatively foster curiosity and knowledge about the foods that we grow and eat. We do this through our Edible Education philosophy and programs. These programs consist of a farm day camp for kids; workshops, seminars, and cooking classes for adults, ongoing studies for farm interns, tours and dinners for the community at large, and other creative events with food, nutrition and sustainability as a focus.”
