Ominous Rumblings in the Middle East

Index futures have opened moderately lower Sunday, implying traders are at least minimally aware of some threatening developments in the Middle East. There’s a low-grade shooting war going on at the moment between Israel, Syria and Hezbollah, but one must search the web diligently to understand how several developing stories could potentially add up to very serious trouble. Hezbollah, Iran’s proxy in the region, has been advancing on the Golan Heights, a key strategic area held by Israel. For its part, Russia, which has sometimes allied with Israel in their own war on terror, is doing little to restrain Hezbollah. Israel’s initial response was a pre-emptive strike on a Syrian airbase where Russian attack helicopters and special forces are deployed. And most recently, on Sunday, Israel declared a large-scale mobilization of military reserves. A particularly interesting piece of the story is that Israel is reported to have destroyed an inbound Syrian missile with its Arrow defense system with an explosion that could be heard a hundred miles away.  Try to imagine what it would be like if a full-scale conflict were to erupt.

•”Rickover became something of an anti-nuclear activist in his later years. I recall seeing on television Rickover giving a speech to Congress upon his retirement, and saying we didn’t need any more nuclear weapons or submarines and then “I think we are all going to blow ourselves up”. It gave me chills at the time (at the peak of the Cold War) to hear a senior military officer say such a thing.”

And, in the words of Agent Smith of “The Matrix” fame:

“Do you hear that Mr Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability”

So, if there are any humans still around in the future, they will very likely call the period from 1914 to our looming demise in 2017, “The Hundred Years War – 2.0”
