Bears had the Dow down by nearly 140 points in the early going Monday but couldn’t put it away. Instead, the Indoos rallied to finish the day just 13 points lower. This smothered volatility bets that had looked like a winning trifecta ticket just hours earlier. We came in looking to buy volatility ourselves via call options on VXX, and for a while it look like the opportunity was wafting out of reach. Instead, the VXX collapsed as the broad averages rallied back to unchanged.
