Kavanaugh Hearings Promise an Entertaining Week

Confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s choice to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, promise a week rich in partisan theatrics on Capitol Hill. By any measure, Kavanaugh has enjoyed a very distinguished career in law, including getting hired in 2008 as a visiting professor at Harvard Law School by none other than Elena Kagan, the school’s dean at the time. He was a favorite of students, although most of them would probably view him these days as a grave threat to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in America. It is predictable that the hearings will be filled with vicious slander against Kavanaugh, and that the vehemence of it will make Democrats and their supporters seem unhinged. It is also predictable that Kavanaugh will be confirmed — with at least 55 Senate votes, according to Sen. Lindsey Graham. The Republic will survive, possibly for an even nastier confirmation battle if Trump gets to replace the aging (85) Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
