Brutal summer heat will likely overshadow whatever the stock market does to entertain us as the week draws to a close. The entire U.S. weather map is shaded red right now, meaning 100-degree temperatures will prevail nearly everywhere. Here in Florida, where humidity can get stuck above 80% for months, the heat index — i.e., how hot it feels — could exceed 110 degrees. That’s great weather for golf if your goal is to keel over dead with a putter in your hands. The beaches down here offer little relief, since warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures have spawned a flotilla of seaweed that extends 200 feet into the surf and is piled a foot high on the beaches. How will you beat the heat?

Here in Calgary we have had what I would call a normal summer so far. Our Calgary Stampede started off with rain and ran intermittently over the first week in July but no real heat yet. The farmers look to have a bumper crop save those that get hail. Some of the 50to1.net project contributors do speak of the mini ice age coming and we just had a cold streak this past winter that was 7wks long at or below -20C longest since the 1940’s with record pipes freezing in a city of 1.2 million great to kill off the pine beetle I hope. But who knows if the summer heat will bring back the forest fire smoke we enjoyed last August (not) which even comes indoors so air-conditioning doesn’t help and no ocean breezes.

Solar Activity and the next Maunder Minimum
The ‘Maunder Minimum’ is the name given to the period from 1645 to 1715 when the number of sunspots – ‘storms’ on the sun – became almost zero.
The period is named after the solar astronomer Edward Walter Maunder (1851-1928), who was working at The Royal Observatory at Greenwich when he discovered the dearth of sunspots during this period.
During one 30-year period within the Maunder Minimum there were only about 50 sunspots compared with a more typical 40,000.
Maunder was a driving force in the foundation of the British Astronomical Association and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.
The sun was well observed during the period of the Maunder Minimum and this lack of sunspots is well documented.
This period of solar inactivity corresponded to a climatic period called the ‘Little Ice Age’ when in Europe rivers that were normally ice-free, froze and snow fields remained at low altitudes throughout the year.
The forecast for the next solar cycle says it will be the weakest of the last 200 years. The maximum of this next cycle – measured in terms of sunspot number, a standard measure of solar activity level – could be 30 to 50% lower than the most recent one. The results show that the next cycle will start in 2020 and reach its maximum in 2025.”
The beginning of a Grand Solar Minimum can only be definitely declared after several very low solar cycles (11- year-cycles or Schwabe cycles). A decline of 30- 50% in sunspot numbers already brings us to Dalton Minimum levels.
